He’s everywhere!

Everywhere!  That’s where Brownfield Ag News Tom Steever is this week.  Tom started the week in Las Vegas at the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) where he moderated the special awards banquet.  We have proof he was there, as he sent this picture that he took from the podium:

There is also this picture of a rather strange looking dessert that was served. . .

And apparently he did have his journalist cap on while there, because there is a picture of Tom interviewing NACD President Gene Schmidt.

From Vegas, Tom flew to Nashville, Tennessee for the Cattle Industry Convention (CIC) where Brownfield’s Ken Anderson was already hard at work covering the event. (Brownfield’s coverage of CIC is sponsored once again this year by Novartis Animal Health.)

Tom, as President of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB) brought greetings to the CIC from NAFB and from Brownfield. Thanks to Chuck Zimmeran with AgWired for sharing this picture of Tom at the very large and interesting microphone podium. . .

Congrats to Pedro’s Angus!

The 2012 Ohio Cattlemen’s Industry Excellence Award is sponsored by Brownfield Ag News.  Ohio Brownfield Farm Director Dave Russell presented the award to Bill and Bev Roe, Pedro’s Angus at the 2012 Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Awards Banquet.

What to pack

This just in from the Easternmost Brownfield Ag News office:

This time of year I never really know what to pack when covering various meetings around the country. So you can imagine how much I appreciated seeing this from the ASI Weekly as I was beginning to think about what to pack for the American Sheep Industry Convention in Scottsdale, AZ this week –

The long-range weather forecast for Scottsdale shows sunny skies with the day-time highs in the low 70′s and night-time lows in the mid-40′s. This is perfect weather for your light wools!

That helps, thanks for the suggestion.

First interview

Dave Russell has been a farm broadcaster for a very long time.  I’m not suggesting he’s “old.”  I like to think of those of us who have been in the business for many years as “well-seasoned” and “experienced.”

Dave shares this:

I have no idea how many, but over the years I’ve had the opportunity to interview a number of people for their first time. My latest, first time interview, was with 8 year old Jordyn Wickard (daughter of Chris and Julia and sister of Jacob) during the 25th Anniversary of the Hoosier Beef Congress. Here’s the interview.

And in the corner of the barn.

Brownfield’s Indiana Farm Director Meghan Grebner is out covering a story today and sent this message a few minutes ago:

I was at Dull’s Tree Farm in Thorntown, IN to see several volunteers help load Christmas trees for FedEx to ship to Bahrain, Rota Spain and Great Lakes as part of the Trees for Troops program. In one corner of the barn there are the trees to be loaded. Across the way – Bill the llama, some sheep. . .

. . . and an ATM.

I guess Dull’s is always prepared, too!

Teamwork!

Tom Steever and Meghan Grebner teamed up to help make the 2011 Illinois Master Showmanship Contest in Illinois the huge success that it was.  Tom’s great pipes (voice) and Meghan’s practical knowledge in the show ring were put to great use last Friday night at the Illinois State Fair.

Fancy meeting you here

I used to say that the State Fair was sort of a “melting pot” for people I’ve known – some well and some not so well – throughout my life.  I love the look on Meghan Grebner’s face in this picture when she was helping out at the Master Showmanship Contest at the Illinois State Fair and saw that one of the 2 judges was someone she said, “is all grown up” since the last time she saw him.

Nathan Ray is the new livestock judging coach at Joliet Junior College. He was judging the swine portion of the Illinois Master Showmanship Competition with Ryan Orrick, who is pictured below with Meghan.

“The Drive”

Meghan Grebner, Indiana Brownfield, shares some thoughts about exhibiting livestock:

Monday night at the Indiana State Fair was incredible. Experiencing “The Drive” for the first time at The Pepsi Coliseum was amazing. My uncle judged the barrow show in Indiana and I’ll use one of his lines “I come from one of the other ‘I-states’ west of here and after being at shows all over the nation, Indiana really does it right.” I couldn’t agree more. I loved showing livestock in Illinois and it was a great show all around – but experiencing the Grand Championship Drive inside the Pepsi Coliseum gave me goosebumps from the time it started until it wrapped up.

I love watching kids show livestock – they are all so different… but you could see it in all of those kids faces, they were intense, focused and determined to do their best and win. For the first year 4-H’ers that made it to the Coliseum to the kids that finished their showing careers there and everyone in between – you can tell, there is nothing better than “getting’ to the Coliseum” .

Brennen North, winner of the Grand Champion Barrow with his Champion crossbred barrow got caught up in the excitement and hugged the Indiana Purebred Pork Queen.

The Sale of Champions is this Saturday, in the Pepsi Coliseum.

Cattle industry talk

I hope you’ve had the chance to listen to Ken Anderson’s reports from the 2011 Summer Cattle Industry Conference on your local Brownfield affiliate radio station or on the Brownfield Ag News website

That’s our good friend Ron Hays with Radio Oklahoma Network (left) sitting in on the interview Ken is doing with Tom Field of NCBA.
