And in the corner of the barn.

Brownfield’s Indiana Farm Director Meghan Grebner is out covering a story today and sent this message a few minutes ago:

I was at Dull’s Tree Farm in Thorntown, IN to see several volunteers help load Christmas trees for FedEx to ship to Bahrain, Rota Spain and Great Lakes as part of the Trees for Troops program. In one corner of the barn there are the trees to be loaded. Across the way – Bill the llama, some sheep. . .

. . . and an ATM.

I guess Dull’s is always prepared, too!

NAFB Foundation recognizes Scholarship winners

Brownfield’s Ken Anderson, President of the NAFB Foundation, recognized the scholarship recipients at the luncheon today during National Assn. of Farm Broadcasting Convention in Kansas City.  Our very own Carah Hart, Brownfield intern, received the coveted Glenn Kummerow Scholarship in the amount of $5,000.

Congratulations to Lauren Bogel, Texas Tech University and Carah Hart, University of Missouri.

Kansas City, here we come (or here we are!)

The 2011 National Association of Farm Broadcasting Convention is underway and members of the Brownfield crew that aren’t here are on their way!  Our very own Tom Steever is NAFB President Elect and Convention Chair.  The NAFB Convention Chronicles featured his official welcome to the big event.

Ken Anderson, Nebraska Brownfield, who serves as President of the NAFB Foundation; John Perkins, Brownfield Commodity Market Reporter; and Meghan Grebner, Indiana Brownfield stopped working on Brownfield programs long enough to pose for a picture in the NAFB newsroom this morning.

Germany pictures on Brownfield Flickr stream

You may remember I traveled to Germany and the Netherlands in mid-September with Bayer CropScience to attend the annual press conference in Monheim.  I have finished loading pictures from that trip to the Brownfield Flickr stream, so please, jump over and take a look!

There are also stories (with audio) on the Brownfield website.

Lucky 7

Ryan Best of New Mexico says he’s not superstitious, but he may have had lady luck on this side last week. Ryan shared with Brownfield’s Dave Russell that during the week he found 7 pennies, all heads up. Ryan carried all 7 pennies in his FFA jacket pocket. On Saturday, during the final session of the 84th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ryan Best was elected President of the National FFA.

Behind the blue and gold

If you didn’t know it already, the National FFA Convention is underway in Indianapolis this week.  It’s a big deal.  National FFA Convention coverage is featured on the Brownfield Ag News website and on the Brownfield Ag News radio network.  Looking out at the crowd during the general session, you see an ocean of blue and gold.  It is an awesome experience.

It is amazing when you think about the sheer numbers in this organization.  There are currently 523,309 FFA members, aged 12-21,in 7,487 chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Meghan Grebner and Dave Russell from our broadcast team are covering the convention and reporting on some activities that are held in conjunction with it.

Meghan spent some time with FFA members participating in National Days of Service.  One of the projects is restoring an old farmstead on 4 acres in the middle of Zionsville. The FFA has been part of this project since they moved the convention to Indianapolis and this is the kitchen that they’ve restored so far.

The work is certainly not limited to indoors.  Meghan found these these FFA members bracing one of the outdoor sheds.

Seeing pictures like these and listening to the stories that are coming out of Indiana this week takes me back to my first National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri in 1977.

Do you remember your first National Convention?  Tell us about it!

Iowa State Fair #1 fan

Cumalene Carroll is without a doubt, the number #1 fan of the Iowa State Fair.  You may remember that Julie Harker produced a feature story about Cumalene not missing a single Iowa State Fair in her entire life.  That’s saying something.

Cumalene and her husband Richard visited Brownfield’s Jefferson City studios this morning.  Clyde Lear gave them the grand tour.
