Germany pictures on Brownfield Flickr stream

You may remember I traveled to Germany and the Netherlands in mid-September with Bayer CropScience to attend the annual press conference in Monheim.  I have finished loading pictures from that trip to the Brownfield Flickr stream, so please, jump over and take a look!

There are also stories (with audio) on the Brownfield website.

NAFB Staffers visit Brownfield

With National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB) Convention just a couple of weeks away, Brownfield’s Tom Steever, NAFB President-Elect, is working with the NAFB staff to put finishing touches on convention planning.  NAFB Executive Director Tom Brand and the newest member of the NAFB staff, Becki Rhoades, Marketing and Communications Director, are visiting Tom and other Brownfielders in the Jefferson City, Missouri studios/offices today.

Brownfield: past and present

Brownfield Ag News, past and present, was well represented at the 2011 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Former Brownfield intern Bev Kreul was working in the National FFA media center; former Brownfield farm broadcaster DeLoss Jahnke is on staff at National FFA; Meghan Grebner is Indiana Brownfield Farm Director; former Brownfield farm broadcaster Tom Brand is the Executive Director of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting;  Dave Russell is Ohio Brownfield Farm Director; Carah Hart, former Brownfield intern was working in the National FFA Convention media center.

Big news for new officers

Brownfield’s Meghan Grebner shares a photo she took Saturday when former Brownfield intern Bev Kreul, working in the National FFA Convention News Room was showing the new National FFA officer team the news release announcing their election.

Overheard in the media room: “If you haven’t called anyone you need to call – you should do that now… you’d hate for them to not hear it from you first.”

Lucky 7

Ryan Best of New Mexico says he’s not superstitious, but he may have had lady luck on this side last week. Ryan shared with Brownfield’s Dave Russell that during the week he found 7 pennies, all heads up. Ryan carried all 7 pennies in his FFA jacket pocket. On Saturday, during the final session of the 84th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ryan Best was elected President of the National FFA.

Behind the blue and gold

If you didn’t know it already, the National FFA Convention is underway in Indianapolis this week.  It’s a big deal.  National FFA Convention coverage is featured on the Brownfield Ag News website and on the Brownfield Ag News radio network.  Looking out at the crowd during the general session, you see an ocean of blue and gold.  It is an awesome experience.

It is amazing when you think about the sheer numbers in this organization.  There are currently 523,309 FFA members, aged 12-21,in 7,487 chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Meghan Grebner and Dave Russell from our broadcast team are covering the convention and reporting on some activities that are held in conjunction with it.

Meghan spent some time with FFA members participating in National Days of Service.  One of the projects is restoring an old farmstead on 4 acres in the middle of Zionsville. The FFA has been part of this project since they moved the convention to Indianapolis and this is the kitchen that they’ve restored so far.

The work is certainly not limited to indoors.  Meghan found these these FFA members bracing one of the outdoor sheds.

Seeing pictures like these and listening to the stories that are coming out of Indiana this week takes me back to my first National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri in 1977.

Do you remember your first National Convention?  Tell us about it!

Iowa State Fair #1 fan

Cumalene Carroll is without a doubt, the number #1 fan of the Iowa State Fair.  You may remember that Julie Harker produced a feature story about Cumalene not missing a single Iowa State Fair in her entire life.  That’s saying something.

Cumalene and her husband Richard visited Brownfield’s Jefferson City studios this morning.  Clyde Lear gave them the grand tour.
