NAFB Staffers visit Brownfield

With National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB) Convention just a couple of weeks away, Brownfield’s Tom Steever, NAFB President-Elect, is working with the NAFB staff to put finishing touches on convention planning.  NAFB Executive Director Tom Brand and the newest member of the NAFB staff, Becki Rhoades, Marketing and Communications Director, are visiting Tom and other Brownfielders in the Jefferson City, Missouri studios/offices today.

POTUS interview

Your political viewpoint doesn’t really make any difference when, as an agricultural broadcaster/journalist, your request to interview the President of the United States is approved.  It’s even MORE cool when the White House calls you because they want to reach farmers and folks in rural communities across the Heartland of this great country.

Brownfield’s Tom Steever, President-Elect of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting and one of those really great people I get to work with every day, got that call from the White House and interviewed President Obama late yesterday afternoon.

Teamwork!

Tom Steever and Meghan Grebner teamed up to help make the 2011 Illinois Master Showmanship Contest in Illinois the huge success that it was.  Tom’s great pipes (voice) and Meghan’s practical knowledge in the show ring were put to great use last Friday night at the Illinois State Fair.

Steever steps up

Brownfield’s Tom Steever has taken over the reins of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting.  Having served as President-Elect since January 1, Tom will have a dual role of leadership in the organization, following the tragic death of NAFB President Lindsay Hill.

Tom made the following announcement to the association membership:

As a result of Lindsay’s tragic death, with Board approval, I’ll serve out the year as President-Elect and also assume the responsibilities of NAFB President. Then at the start of 2012, I’ll assume the office of President as I normally would have. That will also allow for candidates to surface for the office of NAFB National Vice President to be elected at the annual convention in November when current Vice President Mark Oppold will be considered at that time for President Elect.

Moving on to other matters, I want to personally welcome NAFB veteran and Hall of Fame inductee Gene Millard to the temporary position of NAFB interim executive director. Gene has agreed to work for us part time as a staff point person in the executive director search and also to assist in securing a new office location for NAFB. There are several factors that led us to a decision to move our headquarters to a new location actually less than a mile from our current one.

Tom has the support of the entire Brownfield Ag News organization!

Go Jacks

You may or may not know that both Tom Steever and Ken Anderson are graduates of South Dakota State University.  (If you worked with them, believe me, you would know.)  You also might know that in addition to Brownfield Ag News radio network, Learfield Communications also has a sports division.  Learfield Sports partners with more than 50 collegiate institutions, conferences and associations.  Tom was pleased as punch yesterday to discover that his beloved Jackrabbits are a Learfield Sports partner.

Snow and ice does not deter Brownfield team!

Tom Steever, Julie Harker and Ken Anderson have been in Atlanta these past few days covering first AgConnect Expo and then American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Meeting.  Anyone listening to national news or reading the newspaper or internet weather sites is aware that Atlanta got smacked with a snow and ice event that just about shut the city down.  Winter weather is no challenge for Midwest farmers and farm broadcasters.  HOWEVER, shuttle buses taking attendees from their hotels to the convention center ceased operating at one point due to the icy roads, so farmers and farm broadcasters took advantage of MARTA, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, waiting in long lines underground to ride the escalator up to get on the train.

In “Icelanta” for AFBF Annual Meeting coverage

Brownfield’s Tom Steever, Julie Harker and Ken Anderson left Midwest winter for what is often called “Hotlanta” to cover AgConnect Expo and American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Convention these past few days.   Not so much “hot” as it was “cold and icy.”  They are troopers, though, and turned travel delays into more and better coverage for Brownfield Ag News listeners and viewers!

We were seriously considering shopping for studio space in Atlanta because at one point this week it looked like they might be down there a while!
